Risk communication community engagement to contain the Mpox outbreak in Kampala and Wakiso

During the later months of 2024, Uganda experienced an Mpox outbreak which became a public health emergency. Cases sprouted in various parts of the country; however, majority of the cases were from Kampala district, due to its realities as a busy and congested area. This necessitated the need for unique interventions to be designed to prevent the further spread of Mpox and increase uptake of the precautionary behaviors and practices.

As a result, UNICEF Uganda contracted S4P group to design and implement these unique interventions. S4P Group worked with audiences in Kampala and other technical officials to co-create interventions and solutions for the Mpox outbreak. Some of the solutions that were co-created included ensuring that priority audiences understood the sigs and symptoms of Mpox in the easiest way possible, use of edutainment to engage audiences around Mpox, integration of games in the community engagement activities, liaising with popular personalities to conduct the community engagement activities, among others.

After rolling out the solutions, the Mpox cases have greatly reduced in Kampala, Wakiso and other neighboring districts. As the situation stands, Uganda is almost Mpox-free.
